About the thumbnail downloader
Every YouTube video has a few thumbnail files at fixed sizes — from a 120×90 icon up to a 1280×720 HD image if the creator uploaded one that large. This tool finds the ones a video actually has and lets you save the original, or open it in the MockNex thumbnail editor to add text, stickers or your own photo before downloading.
Who it’s for
Creators redesigning an old thumbnail, editors and designers who need a client’s current thumbnail as a starting point, and anyone collecting thumbnails from their niche for reference.
What makes it different
- Edit the thumbnail straight away — it opens in the Thumbnail Maker as the background, no saving and re-uploading.
- Shows only the sizes the video really has, with their real dimensions and file sizes.
- Trims the black bars from YouTube’s 4:3 thumbnail files automatically when you edit one.
- Runs in your browser: no account, no watermark, and nothing you paste or make is sent to us.
How to download and edit a YouTube thumbnail
- 1Copy the video’s link — from the address bar, or Share → Copy link in the YouTube app. Shorts and youtu.be links work too.
- 2Paste it into the box above and press Get thumbnail.
- 3Pick a size. The largest one the video has is selected for you.
- 4Press Download JPG or PNG to save the original — or press Edit thumbnail to change it first.
- 5In the Thumbnail Maker, add text, stickers, arrows or your photo on top, then use Download JPG or PNG under the canvas.
Features
- Works with watch, youtu.be, Shorts, live, embed and mobile links
- Every available size: HD 1280×720, 640×480, 480×360, 320×180 and 120×90
- Real dimensions and file size for each size before you download
- Download the original as JPG, or as PNG
- One click to open it in the Thumbnail Maker as the background
- Text, fonts, outlines, stickers, photos, undo and redo
- Black bars on the 4:3 sizes are trimmed when you edit
Common use cases
- Refresh an old video
- Grab your current thumbnail, add a stronger hook or a new face, and upload the improved version.
- Client work
- Start from the thumbnail a client already uses instead of asking them to send the file.
- Niche research
- Save top thumbnails from your niche to study the colours, faces and words that work there.
Tips
- Always edit the largest size available — every edit is exported at 1280×720, and small files look soft when they’re enlarged.
- If a video has no HD thumbnail, the 640×480 file is the next best — the editor trims its black bars for you.
- Keep text to three or four words and leave the bottom-right corner clear; YouTube puts the video length there.
- Check your edit in the Thumbnail Preview to see how it reads at feed size before you upload it.
Which thumbnail size should I download?
YouTube keeps up to five versions of every thumbnail. The tool lists only the ones a video really has.
- Max resolution (HD) — 1280×720, 16:9. Exists when the video was uploaded in HD or has a large custom thumbnail. Best for editing and reuse.
- Standard — 640×480, 4:3. The picture sits between black bars above and below.
- High quality — 480×360, 4:3, also letterboxed. Every video has this one.
- Medium quality — 320×180, 16:9, no bars.
- Small — 120×90. Only useful as an icon.
Recommended size for your own thumbnails
YouTube now recommends 3840×2160 pixels (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide, as a JPG or PNG — up to 50 MB from a computer, or 2 MB from the YouTube app. A 1280×720 JPG still meets every rule and uploads from anywhere. Keep faces and text away from the edges and out of the bottom-right corner, where YouTube prints the video length.
Common thumbnail mistakes
Most thumbnails that underperform make one of these:
- Too many words — a full sentence can’t be read at phone size.
- Small or thin text with no outline, which disappears on busy backgrounds.
- Text or a key object under the timestamp in the bottom-right corner.
- A thumbnail that repeats the title instead of adding to it.
- Re-uploading a small, blurry thumbnail that was enlarged from 480×360.

Thumbnail Downloader FAQ
How do I download a YouTube thumbnail in HD?
Paste the video link and choose Max resolution (HD). That is the 1280×720 file. If it isn’t listed, the video doesn’t have an HD thumbnail, and the largest available size is selected instead.
Can I download a 4K YouTube thumbnail?
Creators can now upload thumbnails up to 3840×2160, but the largest public thumbnail file YouTube serves for a video — the one every downloader uses — has been 1280×720 in our testing, so no downloader can give you more than that. If it’s your own video, your original design file is the only full-resolution copy.
Can I edit the thumbnail after downloading it?
You don’t need to download it first. Press Edit thumbnail and it opens in the Thumbnail Maker as the background, ready for text, stickers and photos.
Does it work with YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Paste a youtube.com/shorts link. Shorts thumbnails are usually frames from the vertical video, so they may show bars at the sides.
Why do some sizes have black bars?
YouTube’s 640×480 and 480×360 files are 4:3, so a 16:9 picture is letterboxed inside them. When you edit one of those, the bars are trimmed off automatically.
Can I use someone else’s thumbnail?
Thumbnails belong to the people who made them. Downloading one for reference, research or your own channel’s artwork is fine, but don’t reupload another creator’s thumbnail as your own or use it to pass off their video.
Do you store the videos or images?
No. Your browser fetches the public thumbnail image straight from YouTube’s image server, and editing and exporting happen on your device. We never download videos, and nothing you make is uploaded.
