About the thumbnail preview

A thumbnail that looks great full-screen in your editor can disappear in a feed. Most people see it at around 360 pixels wide on desktop and even smaller in the sidebar, surrounded by other bright thumbnails. This preview puts yours in that context so you can judge the things that matter: whether the text is readable, whether the title gets cut off, and whether it stands out from its neighbours.

Who it’s for

Creators deciding between titles and thumbnails, editors showing clients the final packaging, and anyone who wants to see a thumbnail the way viewers meet it.

What makes it different

  • Shows exactly where your title gets cut off on desktop and mobile, before you publish.
  • Drop your competitors’ thumbnails into the neighbouring slots to see if yours stands out in your niche.
  • Grab the thumbnail straight from a video file and pick the exact frame with a slider.
  • Home, search, sidebar and mobile layouts in light and dark mode — not just one generic preview.

How to preview a YouTube thumbnail

  1. 1Upload your thumbnail (any 16:9 image works best) and type the video title.
  2. 2Fill in the channel name, views, upload age and video length, or keep the examples.
  3. 3Switch between Home, Search, Sidebar and Mobile to see each placement.
  4. 4Toggle dark mode — many viewers use it, and some colours behave very differently on black.
  5. 5Optionally upload a few competitor thumbnails to fill the neighbouring slots, then download the preview as a PNG.

Packaging research
Drop in thumbnails from your niche and check whether yours stands out or blends in.

Tips

  • Look at the Sidebar view first — it’s the smallest placement and the hardest test.
  • If the title is cut off in search, move the most important words to the front.
  • Compare in both light and dark mode; red and dark-blue thumbnails can sink into a dark background.
  • Use real competitor thumbnails from your niche — a thumbnail only needs to stand out from its actual neighbours.

Use it responsibly. Mockups are for design, planning, teaching and fiction. Don’t present them as real screenshots, don’t impersonate real creators, and never use invented numbers to mislead sponsors, buyers or viewers. Read our acceptable use policy.

Thumbnail Preview FAQ

Does this upload my thumbnail anywhere?

No. The image is read by your browser and never leaves your device.

Is the preview exactly what YouTube shows?

It recreates the general layout, sizes and truncation of YouTube’s feeds, but YouTube changes its design and tests variations, so treat it as a close approximation rather than a pixel-perfect copy.

Why is my title cut off?

Feeds limit titles to two lines. On desktop that’s roughly 60–70 characters depending on the words; on mobile it can be fewer. Put the key words first.

Can I compare two thumbnails?

Yes — use the YouTube Thumbnail A/B Tester to put two or three versions side by side in the same feed.
