About the thumbnail maker

Most thumbnails that get clicked follow the same few rules — one subject, three or four words, high contrast, nothing important in the bottom-right corner where YouTube prints the video length. The editor is built around those rules: text gets a thick stroke and shadow by default, the duration badge can be shown as a guide, and a small preview shows how the design reads at the size people actually see it. Everything runs in your browser, so your photos are never uploaded.

Who it’s for

Creators who make their own thumbnails, editors who need a quick variation, and anyone who doesn’t want to learn Photoshop or Canva just to get a 1280×720 image under 2 MB.

What makes it different

  • Built-in YouTube guides: the timestamp badge and the red “watched” progress bar, so you never hide text under them.
  • A squint test and real feed-size previews right under the canvas — the size viewers actually see.
  • Cut-out sticker outline that follows the shape of transparent PNGs, the classic thumbnail face look.
  • Drop or paste a photo straight onto the canvas, drag the green corner to resize, snap to centre, undo with Ctrl/⌘+Z.
  • JPG export that automatically stays under YouTube’s 2 MB limit — no separate compressor.

How to make a YouTube thumbnail

  1. 1Start from a template or a blank canvas. The canvas is 1280×720 pixels, YouTube’s recommended size.
  2. 2Set the background: a colour, a gradient or a photo. Darken or blur a busy photo so text stays readable.
  3. 3Add your photo (a face reacting to the topic works well) and drag it into place. Use Size to scale it.
  4. 4Add text — three or four words. Pick a heavy font, keep the outline on, and drag the text where nothing else competes with it.
  5. 5Turn on “Duration badge” to check that nothing important sits under the timestamp, and glance at the small preview.
  6. 6Download a JPG (compressed to stay under 2 MB) or a PNG.

Common use cases

New uploads
Make a thumbnail in a few minutes without opening design software.
Refreshing old videos
Redesign the thumbnail of a video that stopped getting clicks and compare it with the old one.
Podcast and course episodes
Keep a consistent layout across a series by starting each episode from the same template.

Tips

  • Use three or four words at most. The title already carries the detail; the thumbnail should add emotion or a question.
  • Keep text and faces out of the bottom-right corner — YouTube covers it with the video length.
  • Check the small preview. If you can’t read it at that size, people scrolling on phones can’t either.
  • Don’t repeat the title word for word. Thumbnail and title work best when they say different things.
  • Avoid misleading images. YouTube’s policies treat thumbnails that misrepresent the video as spam or deceptive practices.

Thumbnail Maker FAQ

What size is a YouTube thumbnail?

1280×720 pixels (16:9) is recommended, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. YouTube accepts JPG, PNG, GIF and BMP files. Keep the file under 2 MB — that limit applies when uploading from a phone; desktop uploads accept larger files.

Is this thumbnail maker free?

Yes. There’s no account, no watermark and no limit on downloads. Photos stay in your browser.

Why does my thumbnail need to be under 2 MB?

YouTube rejects larger thumbnails from mobile uploads. The JPG export lowers the quality step by step until the file fits, and tells you the final size.

Can I use any photo?

Use photos you took or have the rights to. Using someone else’s image, or a celebrity’s face to imply an endorsement, can lead to copyright claims or a misleading-thumbnail strike.
