How to Make a Fake Tweet Screenshot (X Post Mockup)
Build a believable X (Twitter) post: name, @handle, badge colours, timestamp format, realistic view and like counts, replies and dark mode.

Tweet screenshots are everywhere: in news segments, pitch decks, YouTube videos, film sets and classroom slides. Making one from scratch is quicker than finding the right real post, and it lets you control every word and number. This guide walks through what an X post contains, how to build one with the fake tweet generator, and how to make the details hold up.
Anatomy of an X post
The post detail view — what you see after tapping a post — is the format most screenshots use. From top to bottom:
| Part | What it shows | Tips |
|---|---|---|
| Profile photo | Round for people and most brands | Use an invented avatar or a plain coloured initial |
| Display name and badge | The name, plus a checkmark if verified | Blue = X Premium subscriber, gold = verified organisation, grey = government or official body |
| @handle | Unique username, under the name | Lowercase, no spaces; underscores are common |
| Post text | Up to 280 characters for most accounts | Premium accounts can post longer, but short posts are more typical |
| Media | Optional image, video or link card | Landscape images crop less in the timeline |
| Timestamp | Time · date, e.g. “9:12 AM · Oct 2, 2026” | Match it to the story you’re telling |
| Views | Shown next to the timestamp | Usually far higher than likes |
| Action bar | Replies, reposts, likes, bookmarks, share | Counts abbreviate: 12.9K, 1.2M |
Step by step
- Open the fake tweet generator. It starts with an example post you can edit.
- In Platform & author, set the Display name and Handle, upload a Profile photo if you have an invented one, and switch Verified on only if the account would plausibly have a badge.
- In Post content, write the Post text. Line breaks are kept, so you can space out a punchline. Add an Image if the post needs one and pick its shape.
- Set the Time in the X format —
9:12 AM · Oct 2, 2026— then fill in the Engagement numbers (views, replies, reposts, likes, bookmarks). - Under Preview appearance (the phone icon in the bottom bar), choose light or dark mode and decide whether to show the status bar. Most screenshots used in videos and slides hide it.
- Click Export. A 3× PNG is sharp enough for 4K video; pick Social → Wide 16:9 in Preview appearance if the post is going on a slide or a YouTube frame.
Make the numbers believable
Engagement numbers are where mockups most often look off. Real posts tend to follow a rough pattern: views are many times higher than likes, likes are well above reposts, and replies are usually the smallest number — unless the post is controversial, in which case replies can outnumber reposts. A post with 900 likes and 900 replies reads as an argument, not a hit.
- Keep views roughly 20–100 times the like count for an ordinary post.
- Use the abbreviations X uses: 12.9K, 1.2M. The generator formats large numbers for you.
- Scale the numbers to the account: a local café with 2 million views needs a story to explain it.
These are rules of thumb, not statistics — real posts vary a lot. The point is that the numbers should fit the account and the story.
Replies and threads
For a conversation under a post, use the X reply generator, which builds the original post with a stack of replies, including likes and reply counts on each. For a back-and-forth between two accounts, keep the replies short and give the original poster the last word if the screenshot is meant to land a joke.
Where people use tweet mockups
- Film and TV: invented accounts reacting to in-story events. Our guide to social media props for productions covers clearance and legibility on camera.
- Videos and explainers: a post on screen while you talk about the topic. See chat screenshots for YouTube for sizing tips that apply here too.
- Marketing and design: pitch decks, launch mockups and ad concepts — use your own brand’s account or an invented one.
- Teaching: examples of misinformation, scams or tone, with invented accounts.
